John 16:33
“In the world you will have tribulation.  But take heart; I have overcome the world.”

2 Corinthians 12:10

I. God’s Covenant Faithfulness (Ruth 1:6)

“Know therefore that the LORD your God is God, the faithful God who keeps covenant and steadfast love with those who love him and keep his commandments, to a thousand generations.”

II. Misguided Counsel (Ruth 1:7-10)

Contentment- Phil 4:11-12

Pleasure- Psalm 16:11

Joy- I Peter 1:8

Hebrews 11:1
“Now faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen.”

III. Misguided Hope (Ruth 1:11-13)

Psalm 73:25-26
“Whom have I in heaven but you? And there is nothing on earth that I  desire besides you. My flesh and my heart may fail, but God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever.”

Psalm 119:67
“Before I was afflicted I went astray, but now I keep your word.”

Psalm 119:71
“It is good for me that I was afflicted, that I might learn your statutes.”

IV. True Conversion (Ruth 1:14-18)

4 Characteristics of Ruth’s Conversion:
  1. Commitment to the Living God
  2. Commitment to the Lord’s People
  3. Commitment to Share the Joys and Sorrows of Others
  4. A Commitment Until Death

Matthew 16:24-25
“Then Jesus told his disciples, “If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross and follow me. For whoever would save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake will find it.”

Luke 9:23
“If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross daily and follow me.”

Application:

1. Be sure not to allow circumstances to alter your view of God- His grace, goodness, faithfulness, and mercy.

2. Identify the “gods” you may be tempted to go back to during your times of trial and affliction. (I Thess. 1:9)

3. Count the cost as to what it means to be a follower of Jesus.

Philippians 1:29
“For it has been granted to you that for the sake of Christ, you should not only believe in him but also suffer for his sake.”
